I have a mystery of my own, as well--a missing portrait of the Lafayette family that was given to George Washington by the marquis in 1785. It was hung in the best spot at Mount Vernon, according to one of Washington's letters, and was known to be there at least until 1799. It is thought to have been passed on to heirs of the family, and quite possibly was lost during the Civil War, but today it is not known where it might be if it even still exists.

How I would love to help find that portrait and to see the marquis and his wife and children! If you hear rumors of the portrait's whereabouts, I would surely appreciate you passing them my way...
