In one of my books there is a picture of a painting depicting Louis XVI by Louis Hersent. It looks as if Louis XVI gives alms to the starving population suffering from the severe winter 1788-1789. The painting was painted during the restoration but my question is whether this is historically correct or not? Where can I see this painting?

He did indeed, restoring an old tradition going back to the Valois. I believe that he always tried to keep these visits quiet, he didn't want people to start saying "Look at the good King Louis!". Typically modest and self effacing.
