OT question-do they know if the bones at St. Denis are really MA's. I thought she was buried in an unmarked grave. Was there some hair left?

That has always fascinated me too. I asked the question here some time ago and there was no feedback from the Group. I remember reading a report somewhere of the exhumation of Louis and MA's remains in the Madeleine cemetery in 1815. Apparently one of the observers who knew the Queen fainted away when he saw the hair well preserved on the skull and the headband that she had worn to the scaffold in with the corpse. But I though she had thrown that off with a marvellous regal throw of her head as she reached the top of the steps? Who wil ever know, unles we DNA them, which would be reassuring. I don't know why but I would absolutely LOVE to see her bones (isn't that weird) just like I am still trying and craving to purchase something that belonged to her. and I would spend far too much money, should the opportunity come along, to actually do so...I seem to remember there was more doubt as to the authenticity of Louis' remains. Shame we can't construct a new MA from her DNA.

I don't know, I think it's better to have her memory.

 Re: Wax Figurines
I recall reading in a bio of Madame Royale that she wasn't even sure if they were the remains of her mother because all they had found was some grey matter in some stays.

 Re: Wax Figurines
It would be cool because archeologists reconstructed Neferiti's skull and they were able to reconstruct her face from there and the image on the computer looked exactly like her bust. So perhaps we could do the same thing to Marie Antoinette with her skull. If people found her skeleton perhaps they could attempt to reconstruct what type of build she had etc. and what type of diseases she had in her family etc.

I don’t like it either. I don’t like their clothes (it just don’t look too regal), Louis XVI doesn’t look the same and their daughter doesn’t look too famine.

 Re: Wax Figurines
YES I find Marie Tussaud and Dr Curtius, (really I think Marie's father figure, ) to be two of the most fascinating people in this story of Marie Antoinette. Curtius , already a doctor in Switzerland but a keen artist and wax modeller, is invited to come and show his talents and works off in Paris by the Prince de Conte. He jumps at the chance and soon gets his Cabinet of Wax show established in Paris. Dr Curtius, ( probably a wax self portrait ) I often wonder... all these lifesize figures... where did they get all that wax ? .

 Re: Wax Figurines
I don't like the wax figures at Mme. Tussaud's either. Antoinette is way too buxom. She would have been wearing a corset that flattened her breasts. The clothes don't have the heft of satin, either; they look very flimsy. And of course, the paniers are missing. The one of Louis doesn't look anything like his portraits, and the children's figures look like they were thrown together.
What people will do for a dollar, or a pound, or a euro!
