I totally agree, Pimprenelle, about the link between artist and model. Elisabeth V-LB was able to capture the queen's inner radiance and beauty of soul. At the same time, having Antoinette as a model so frequently afforded the artist an opportunity to make many statements about femininity, about royalty, about motherhood, about nature, about the gift of the present moment and, ultimately, about eternity.

I already posted my favorite portait of Vigée Le Brun in another topic. It's this portait:

My favorites are the one of Antoinette with Louis Joseph, Louis Charles and Madame Royale, though it is saddened by the absence of little Sophie and the image of an empty cradle; and the one of Marie Therese and Louis Joseph sitting together...I have a reproduction of the latter hanging in my bedroom. :)

<hugs>

My favourit painting is the one with her 3 childeren. You know that the painting with the rose , first was painted with Marie antoinette in a simple dress, wearing a simple hat, but the people didn't liked it, they said that the queen was painted in her undergarment, because the paintings of former queens were always as Queen, not as a woman, Quiekly the made a second painting, the one that Marie antoinette is wareing a bleu dress.

My favourite painting of Marie-Antoinette by Vigée-Lebrun is the "A la rose" because I like the dress, the hair, and the environment. The hands and the rose are simply wonderful.
But I adore the painting of Madame de Polignac with the hat. It releases an impression from freshness and intelligence that I like.

Oh, oui, Victoire-Adélaïde ! As they wrote on Wikipédia about the duchess "une étoile de son temps" (a star of her time)...

I hesitate between the Vigée-Lebrunb's painting "à la rose" (the first) and this Drouais's painting :

Marie-Antoinette Dauphine was charming too :P

Oh, yes, Louis-Charles ! She is so beautiful on this portrait too... Her delicate complexion, her large blue eyes, her slightly aquiline nose, her Habsburg lip... and this long royal neck...

This painting by Dumont is interesting too, even if it must be reverse, for Antoinette was not lefthanded. I like her portrayed by Dumont, for her long ovale is so obvious...

However, this Kusharsky one remains my favorite...

Ah exactly I remember that you like Kusharsky :P
It's true that this painting is very realistic.
Unfortunatly it isn't finished because it would be more beautiful if completed I think. But it allows us to preserve a mystery

The pic I found on the net is not very beautiful. But I have this portrait right here, and I look at her while typing... Her eyes are fascinating, her expression so rich, so complex, she seems to talk to us...

Better here...

That's what I find the most fascinating about Kusharsky's paintings of Antoinette. This one too :

Image

How strongly she looks at us ! She keeps us in her glanze, and would never leave us... It's so amazing ! And a constant of her portraits, isn't it ? Actually, she must have a magnetic look... hé hé ! She is a Scorpio...

Ah I completely agree with you Pimprenelle!
I would look at a painting of Marie-Antoinette during hours without problem :P
