Post La nouvelle Heloise
Definitely the 18th century best seller and "must read". I was so happy to find it in my own language as I wanted to buy it for so long. I am sure that majority of people from the forum read it so I am looking forward to discussing it... So, did you enjoy it?

Everything I read that was written in the late 18th century, was full of quotes from La nouvelle Heloise. The significance of this book in the 18th century was huge, it shaped the public opinion and was sold in many many copies, more than any book in the 18th century. Public reaction was so strong and it gave Rousseau enormous popularity, people writing to him letters from all over the world to thank him for his master peace. Knowing all that I had high expectations and I am so interested to hear your opinions and share mine...

I tend to agree that this book was very influential, like Choderlos de Laclos' "Liaisons dangéreuses".

It was again an epistolary novel.

Rousseau's influence was already well established and it has to be said was used by political thinkers to prone the movement away from the Church and establishment ideas.

It was on he shelf of many noble libraries, including the Queen's! I even heard she may have visited his tomb in Ermenonville, though I cannot remember where I read that now.

Did you read the book Baron??
It is one huge moral lesson, full of observations and examples of a simple and moral life, attitudes about love and education (It reflects Rousseau's philosophy), sometimes it gets a bit dull, as the characters appear so perfectly decent and moral that one forgets that they are just humans. Since i am very imperfect I couldn't really relate though I like when people think and act with higher goals in mind, though in this case it was a bit exaggerated. I cried following the love story of two main characters though I often got so irritated by them... But it was also so touching to read what a true love can make you do, which sacrifices it can take, that there are always decent and right paths a person can choose for the sake of honor, decency, love... It pushes you to expect much more from yourself and others and never agree to poor, humiliating solutions or accept such friendships or passions.

Well I started it but I got a bit bogged down to be honest. I read it in the original and highly polished 18th century French, and it was quite a challenging and dense read.

I handed it back without reading more than half.....which I'm not proud of. :(

Its' really a book that you need to devote lots of time too, and do nothing else....perhaps on holidays.

So its' difficult for me to judge the moral lessons in love contained in this book.

I intend to get it out again some time, once I've finished "Anna Karenina", which I'm close to finishing and then a biography on Maréchal Lannes and another on Louis XII.

I read it in the magnificent and highly polished Serbian and it was such a pleasure!

Honestly, I understand this sort of book not appealing to you.
