I thought Fraser's book read well. Vincent Cronin's dual biography was a good read too.

I found from an antique market in Nice,
Marie Antoinette by
René Benjamin,de l'Académie Goncourt (Les Editions de France 1940).
Has anyone read it?

I saw it on e-bay, Aurora, but finally didn't buy it. I have problems with my local post... They don't deliver the books ! Can you imagine that ? :?

I personally haven't, but I have been told more than once that it is excellent. It is an edition of several essais on Marie-Antoinette, among which I only know Terry Castle's "Marie-Antoinette Obsession" (bought it for I fell in love with the title... :D ). It is a pretty good analyse of the influence the character of Marie-Antoinette had on women, especially after this two English ladies adventure in Trianon. I'd like to read the other articles also !

The Journey by Antonia Fraser is by far the best. If you want to read about the clothes of that time you should read:

The Queen of Fashion: What Marie ANtoinette Wore to the Revolution

Indeed, La Dauphine, the bio by Fraser is not too bad. Unfortunately, it is still based on this Freudian thesis Zweig developped ages ago ! Frustration and compensation do not explain every aspect of Marie Antoinette's psychology ! She is a far richer soul !

I hope the bio by Simone Bertiere will soon be translated in English. Many French readers put it on the top !

I would join Pimprenelle and recommend Bertiere. I would also highly recommend the two volume study by Nesta Webster.
