Good idea! The memories of Campan are very interesting and she gives many details! But some time she imagines a little too

i finished this book and it was utterly fascinating and so heartbreaking towards the end. i really recommend it to everyone.

i particularly enjoyed how colours of her dresses were like a code eg yellow and black for the habsburg family, green and violet for royalty.

the book really opened my eyes on an aspect of MA that people usually go on and on about (her expenditure on clothes) but actually know very little about. her expenditure was pretty normal compared to what other nobles were doing and when she started dressing more plainly, she was attacked by her own people. talk about a no win situation! :(

I still haven't finished. but I agree. People express themselves through fashion MA did and its just another way to truly figure out who she was you know?

yeah people are stupid. Unfortunate fact of life :(

I received this delightful book for my birthday this week and I can't wait to dive into the fascinating world of Antoinette once more! Unfortunately I think I have a reprinted edition as it doesn't have the grand dark cover with the lady in the voluminous cream dress.... Just the Coiffure à l'Indépendance ou le Triomphe de la Liberté portrait, for even though I love her dearly, is a trifle ridiculous!

No, you have the UK version, which did not come with the Reine des Centfeuilles cover, but the one with the fashion plate (which isn't actually of MA).

Thank you for clearing that up. Usually in Australia we get the U.S. editions, indeed when I search on local bookstores online the U.S. cover is displayed. Isn't that odd that the cover picture isn't even Antoinette?

yes, sometimes they choose cover that are not really related to the book...enjoy your reading! I saw the book on a bookshop some time ago and was really tempted to buy it, it seemed really promising...but I've just begun Lever's biography, so I'll turn to it later :)

Well, the US cover isn't over her either, just of a model with a sack back dress and a pouf! But they both convey the same feel.

I Finished this book a year ago, but I just wanted to add the comment that I LOVE it. It was one of my favorite reads about Marie Antoinette, if not my favorite. I felt that it caught the essence of her personality so strongly.

I am half way through the book and I am loving every page. I will even read the notes when the book is done. My favorite parts so far are her ability to win the afections of Louis VX and be abile to accompany him on horseback on hunts, her forsight about the small pox vacine and her ability to get Louis VXI to take it. The pouf chapter . Most of all though how she won the trust and respect, and what seems to me the beginings of love from Lois XVI.
