Post Evelyne Lever's book (The Last Queen)
I am reading the English version of Evelyne Lever's (The Last Queen of France). I am wondering if anyone here has read this book in both English and the original French? Is it thought to have been translated well?

I believe that this english biography of Lever is an adaptation of her biography published in 1991 in France, which was very complete and right.
I believe that the english version is lighter and less complete, but I did not read it...

I hear from those who have read both translations that it is not one better biographies of the queen, although it has many details of interest.

If you mean lighter as in light weight, not deeply informative, then yes. It seems to skim or gloss over too many things. IMO
If you mean not complete as it was not the whole French book, that is a shame but it would explain why the book is so basic.

Actually, dear melly, there are less pages in this English translation than in the French original. It is not my favorite bio of Marie-Antoinette. I hope Bertière's and Delorme's ones will soon be available in English !

I am currently reading Ian Dunlop's book, that also seems very light. Does anyone know about it ?

The English adaptation of Lever's book has recently appeared in French as "C'était Marie-Antoinette":

As far as I know the original complete Lever bio was only translated into German.

Right now I only have available for reading are books by:

Olivier Bernier (1985)
Joan Haslip (1988)
Antonia Fraser (2001)
Carolly Erickson (1991)
and the aforementioned Lever.

Besides the Frasier which I am sure most of you have read, is there anything of substance here?

Avoid Erickson. I don't know about Haslip - she is usually pretty good.

I have Bernier's volume of the queen's letters which he edited. The letters are great, but some of his commentary is questionable.

Bernier accuses Marie-Antoinette of lying to her mother when she claims that most of her friends are older than herself, but M-A was telling the truth. Her friends were mostly older, except for Artois.

There was this good Elisabeth too  Even if she was less extravagant than her Artois brother :D

And Madame Elisabeth was practically a child when M-A was a young queen.
