that really was awful! :( Its sad when Louis XVI asked "Are There no fathers in the assembly (or is it Estates General?)"

Its alwasy bugged me how little Marie Therese is acknowledged as well. Sometimes when you read the biographys it was like she wasn't around even though you know she was! The only one that always gets acknowledged is Louis Charles

And what about Ernestine ? She was there all the time, and is never mentionned by any biographer of Antoinette, as far as I know !

That is why I like Vincent Cronin's book, he mentions Ernestine and Zoe both.

The adopted children? I had never heard of them until I read about them here. Do you know where they were when the Royal family was taken from Versailles?

Yes, Ernestine at least was with them but they sent both girls out of the country before the monarchy fell. Ernestine was formally adopted because she was list among the "Enfants de France." I don't know if Zoe was formally adopted.

Thank you, this is so aggravating to me, that nothing I have read so far has mentioned these children. I feel it is an important fact, something like this goes well into helping one understand the person she was.

I just found a mention of Ernestine in Bertiere's book. But the writer does not specify the girl's name... :? No Zoé, anyway... :?

I have only seen both girls mentioned by name in Cronin's book and another bio of the queen by two French names which I cannot remember at the moment - I will look it up. The queen mentions Ernestine in a letter to Madame de Polignac as well.

Ernestine and Zoe and what became of them are also mentioned in a bio of Marie-Antoinette by Philippe Huisman and Marguerite Jallux.

Yes they never mention enough of them! I had heard about Ernstine. I knew about her because I believe she was mentioned in a MA Bio....and then the whole story about the fake Duchess D'Angouleme involves her as well.
I had never heard of Zoe.

If MA adopted in they were a big part of her everyday life...it astounds me how a biographer/historian could ignore their excistance!

Yes the historians tackle very little this subject it's astonishing... :?

But it's true that Marie-Antoinette, after having been confined of Marie-Thérèse in 1778, neglected these children much more, and consequently They intervened less in her life.
But the historians should more develop this subject it's sure :D

Actually, the queen did not adopt Ernestine and Zoe until long after Madame Royale was born. It may even have been after Sophie died, and Mousseline was upset about the baby's death, and wanted a sister. They were close in age to Mousseline and the queen dressed them similarly. They all played together at Trianon. Armand was the only one she may have neglected....

Didn't she also adopt poor kids to make sure her children wouldn't turn out snobby like the other Bourbons?

I remember reading that Marie Therese and Enrnstine were inseperable that they dressed alike and everything. It sound so cute@
