Post Love and Louis XVI by Antonia Fraser
My mother tells me she has bought this for me for one of my christmas presents! Has anyone read this yet and can tell me whether it is any good? Is there much about Marie Antoinette in it?

I did like Antonia Frasers "The Journey" so I hope I will like this too!

Hello,
I have not seen this book yet, but I plan too. I did look at the Amazon and Barnes and Noble web sites and it does look promising.

Happy reading!!

In my opinion, it is indeed a good biography, for it is very sympathetic to Antoinette. Lady Fraser asks many questions, makes interesting historical critics... however, she sometimes falls into romance...

And, but that is highly personal, I find her "Antoinette" quite politically correct ! I sometimes had the feeling she was describing some nice English lady sipping her tea rather than a proud Habsburg archduchess !

I'm reading this book now, and I love her discussion of Anne of Austria. Interesting to hear about a distant Habsburgh/Bourbon relative of Antoinette, I suppose.

Fraser's book was really pleasant to read, and includes many fascinating details enabling to imagine the queen's way of life. That's said there is no actual psychological analysis because Frasers follows Marie-Antoinette day by day and thus lacks some detachment. The analysis is scattered throughout the book, and even if Fraser raises interesting points, she does not develop them. Then, the epilogue boils down to the traditional view of Marie Antoinette : a sweet nature, an apolitical woman that only yearned for a peaceful life ...
I also disliked her not explaining the French people's point of view and the actual reasons of Marie-Antoinette's unpopularity.
