Post Philippe Delorme's "Marie Antoinette"
What a peculiar biography is this book (1999) by Philippe Delorme!

He's got very strong opinions about the queen.

Some of Delorme's points:

- He totally denies the Antoinette-Fersen affair (it was made up by Fersen's own vanity)
- He blames the king for Polignac's strong influence on the queen (he used Polignac in order to distract Antoinette from affairs of state)
- He downsizes Antoinette's abilities as a good mother (her affection was often a pose just like Maria Theresa did with her own daughter)

A very interesting read indeed.

Indeed, York, Philippe Delorme wrote a very interesting biography of Antoinette ! The reason is that he is one of those too rare scholars who take into account the Giraut de Coursac couple's reasearchs. These authors made fascinating discoveries about Louis XVI, that must change current opinions about him.

Joël Felix's book, that I am reading for the moment, also relies on the GdeC works, and Bertière too. That, in my view, makes the difference !

On the other hand, Nasta Webster also denies this Fersen story, and she wrote before the GdeC's discoveries...

Indeed, about Gabrielle, Philippe Delorme wrote cruel words : "the queen thought she had a friend, she actually had a lady's companion"... Terrible statement, isn't it ?

On the other hand, I did not remember Philippe Delorme was so hard with Antoinette as a mother. Is he ? I read his book twice...

It is true this scholar is not tender, and he is very lucid. Also, he sees Antoinette as a very clever woman, whom her husband put into "menus plaisirs" in order to get rid of her from politics. Thus, she had to employ all her energy to "menus plaisirs"... what a waste !

What a good man this Delorme  N'est-ce pas Pim?

Yes me also I like much this historian! He is discrete, modest and calms, and he has a really objective and considered opinion of Marie-Antoinette! And he does not hesitate to say what he thinks: they are rare the historians who refute the relations in love between Marie-Antoinette and Fersen! I like this frankly-spoken! :D

But I think that Marie-Antoinette was a better mother than Marie-Therese...nearer to her children: a mother and not an empress

Marie Antoinette was a WAY better mother then Maria Theresa. She wanted to be close to her kids because they were her kids, not because they could be used as pawns....

Is this biography in English? It sounds great!

Dear Monsieur Delorme,

That is very disappointing. We refer to your book a great deal on this forum, and it would be wonderful if it were in English.

I hope you will find one very soon. I will post any that I can think of.

Bonsoir Monsieur,

J'éspère que nous allons pouvoir échanger des idées avec vous sur ce forum dans l'avenir.

Baron de Batz

P.S. Bonne chance avec votre livre, et votre recherche d'un éditeur anglais!
