True, and Naslund runs with the myth of the corrupting influence of Polignac as well as the myth of Comte Mercy as the benign father figure.

Indeed, Antoinette wrote she considered Mercy a father. Poor sweetheart ! A father who let his daughter die...

I can't help but being persuaded that people are most of all fascinated by Princess de Lamballe because of her awful death. Sad to say, but gore things fascinate the mob...

Yes, and although I love Madame de Lamballe it is just sad to me that Gabrielle continues to be denigrated.

Exact it's true that an awful death influences people :?
And much consider that the departure of Polignac in 1789 is a proof of weakness. Whereas it's Marie-Antoinette who asked him to leave France for their friendship.

I think I find Lamballe's death fascinating considering she died for the King and Queen.

But I think Polignac has a death to remember by, because she died of cancer but mainly of grief for her friend. Anyone who thinks Polignac was cruel is ignorant of the fact of why would she die by grief off of someone whom she took advantage of?

I can just picture Gabrielle's angelic ocean blue eyes shed a tear on her deathbed for Marie and felt a sense of peace that it is over and she can die peacefully and joined her friends.

I went to some trouble to go borrow this book from the library to see what it was all about. I have to say I was rather disappointed...it seems to be one of those books were you put as many fancy words as possible so it's all convoluted. I didn't really get a sense of Marie Antoinette's or anyone elses personality.

I'd like to read a book from Louis point of view, even though he wasn't the sort to write about feelings (as one can tell from his hunting journals!), but alas there doesn't seem to be any.

But yeah, Abundance was pretty boring...

I believe that Vidal's Trianon has a chapter from Louis' point of view...But yes, someone should write a whole novel about him, he deserves it.....

Wow, I just bought Abundance at Borders, now I'm not so sure I should finish it. :( Maybe I'll just finish Queen of Fashion instead.
