 Re: Rose Bertin
I found this other photo that I think is supposed to be her, at least from what I could understand of the page. It seems to talk about her escaping the guillotine. http://oglobo.globo.com/blogs/lula/post ... 64955&a=42Attachment:

 Re: Rose Bertin
ok, I don't know why, but when I repost the link, it shows an inactive page. But if you click on the link right above the photo it will take you there. I can make out a few words, just that she escaped the guillotine, she was a designer and designed for Marie Antoinette. I think that her birth and death year are listed as well. I can't make it all out though. The nose definitely seems different from the other pics, maybe the painter took artistic liberties? Hope that helped some

 Re: Rose Bertin
Hooray! She looks normal and not freakishly skinny. That makes me happy.

 Re: Rose Bertin
Yes Rose is a fascinating figure , often refered to as the founder of " haute couture " in France ( or anywhere else come to think of it ) She became " French Miliner and Modiste" to the young Queen Marie Antoinette and supplied the Queen's extravagent wardrobe from 1772 right up to her dethronement in 1792. The young Marie A became fascinated with clothes and fashion and of course, all of the Parisian ladies followed her lead, Marie was the leader of French fashion. The young, attractive Marie A. was also living in a marriage without sex for much of the 1970s so this, and other frustrations probably fuelled her extravagance and spending on fashion and expensive jewellry.
And Rose, with her two visits to Versailles each week was at the very centre of high society and must have been quite intimate with the Queen and heard a lot of court gossip. Rose must have been a very bright young lady, she was probably earning a fortune in those days too ! ( Pity she did nt write her memoirs )
I read that she died in poverty in London, (but then wikedpaedia says that she died in her house in Epinay sur Seine ! )

 Re: Rose Bertin
yes I suppose they could both be portraits of Rose one in her mid 20s and the other in her late 40s
She must have been around age 25 when she began dressing Marie Antoinette and Marie age 17 (Rose was 8 years older than Marie )
Rose must have been a dynamic lady, to open her own shop by her early 20s and then to secure the patronage of the most glamorous young Royal in Europe... soon to be Queen of France ! What an opportunity ... and Rose seized it with both hands !
