Madame de Pompadour, was once lady in waiting to Louis XV's wife Marie Lecskynska, and soon began to entertain Louis because he was getting bored. She soon became his comfort especially when his wife died, she became mistress and had great political influence, and was in charge of many architectural projects. She died of Tuberculosis, and was replaced by Du Barry. Pompadour was the most doted upon mistress of any previous one, she had atleast 17 Chateaux to herself, and ground floor apartments and attic ones at Versailles. The ground floor ones she later gave to Madame Victoire. She had TWO households at Versailles, a Feat!

La Pompadour is reported to have had great charm and grace, to have been very clever and skillful at manipulating the King and court. She was also respected by the courtiers (if not exactly liked). La du Barry was almost the exact opposite. She was considered crude, "common," and was generally hated by all. Also, there was a considerable time lapse between the two mistresses, during which Louis XV entertained himself at "Stag Park," his own, private brothel.

Interestingly enough, du Barry lived long after Louis XV, and was guillotined during the Terror. Her execution became notorious: unlike the King and Queen, who went to their deaths with quiet dignity, du Barry went all the way screaming, crying and pleading for her life. It is said that the spectators were horrified, and afterwards, expressed sympathy for her.

I have a feeling that the Pompadour age in France may have
been the greatest age of all... with regards to art
Boucher, Fragonard etc, and Literature and exquisite furniture etc

It was hedonistic of course, esp at Versailles, but France was secure
happy, and productive in all the fine arts... its Royal Palace and court
the envy of Europe and the model for all the other Royal Courts of
Europe
(the English Royal Court seemed grey and dowdy by comparison )

I think that Mme de Pompadour deserves a forum all to herself
.......if not a website !

I've been busy with school and such, I haven't had much time to update lately. Sorry :[

I'd love to know more about DuBarry, but there is way more information about Pompadour.

Did you know that while Du Barry lived to Versailles, she took up so much coest space, that she used Pomapdours garderobe, and a few of her rooms to house her dresses and diamonds?

What I find quite offbeat about Pompadour, si that she managed to remain Louis XV's close friend when love had waned between them -she was frigid, so that she wasn't a suitable partner for the king-, and thus her political influence was even greater. It is true that she induced the king to have several mistresses that didn't represent a danger for her. But many other royal mistresses did so, blinking at their royal lovers' various girlfriends, as long as they weren't potential challengers. That's said, making out that she created an actual brothel in that famous stags' park seems somewhat extreme to me. It merely was the place were Louis XV used to meet some of the girlfriends he didn't wish to introduce to the court. He had relationships with them (not very serious though) and they weren't prostitutes, but noble girls.

As for du Barry, I don't know much about her. As far as I know, although she was notoriously a prostitute, she had enjoy quite a good education and knew how to behave. She certainely was despised, but I don't think that she was loathed, because, unlike Pompadour, the class she belonged to did not threat the nobilty's interests. On the other hand, I think that Mme de Pompadour was both feared and resented at the court.

I found a copy of Madame du Barry's memoirs and plan on reading it. Should be very interesting. I'll share my review of it once I'm finished.

Her memoirs are supposed to be apocryphal. However De Castries and Castelot have written good biographies of her, among others.

Her death hurts me the most when it comes to madam du Barry. It may sound odd but not every person has a chance to die that way. People are dying every day without much ceremony and they disappear as if they never existed. Madam du Barry had a ceremonial execution and since being a “famous” person, it was clear that her death is going to be something memorable. I feel sorry that she was not able to carry it out with dignity and honor. I admire all the aristocrats who did.
