It's told all over how her head was put on a spike and used to torment MA. I was surprised while reading Marie-Therese, Child of Terror: The Fate of Marie Antoinette's Daughter by Susan Nagel (gheesh that's a long title! LOL)
that Marie Therese says that the event with the head never happened. I wonder 3 things. Could she be right and it's was just a rumor that was spread for so long it became thought of a true? Did it really happen and she was somehow shielded from it? Or was it so horrific that her mind stuffed it back so she doesn't have to deal with the horror and pain of it?

There is an account of this event told by Clery, King Louis XVI's Valet de Chambre, he was with the royal family in the Tower of the Temple. He was there when the murdered Princess's head was bought in to the Temple grounds.

This can be read online in a book called "The Ruin of a Princess" translated by Katherine Wormeley (1912) Pages 120-124 -also page 249 speaks a little of this in the narrative of Madame Royale.

The incident is well documented....even in its' most gory details, such as one of the bloodthirsty rioters sporting Mme de Lamballe's pubis as a kind of moustache. The rioters wanted at all costs to get in to the Temple building: they were stopped by the guards who said that the Royal family were the property of the revolution. Some of the rioters were allowed up and indicated to the Queen that Mme de Lamballe's head was outside the window on a spike for her to embrace. The Queen never saw her friend's severed head, she fainted away. As for Marie Thérèse Charlotte, she definitely wouldn't have seen anything. That's maybe what she means when she says it never happened: for her it didn't.

You make a very good point and I agree with what you have to say. It never entered my mind that's what she night have meant. Personally, I'm glad she didn't have that image in her head!
