According to one of Louis' biographers (I don't remember who, I am sorry... ), Maurepas insisted on putting Gabrielle de Polignac on Marie Antoinette's way, so that this friendship would occupy the queen and get her out of serious matters, such as supporting Austrian interests, for instance...

Polignac was very close to the clan Marie-Antoinette/Vaudreuil/Besenval/Ligne/Coigny/Guines/Calonne etc...

That's it, precisely... Gabrielle was close to the members of her won salon... Apart from those people, she could only reckon on the queen's and king's support, I am afraid... The reste of the court generally envied and hated her, didn't they ?

I don't know if the others really hated her....they envied her yes I agree, but was it really a hatred like for Du Barry? :?

I don't know... We are used to see it as a conflict Barry vs Antoinette. What was it in Gabrielle's case ? We actually don't really know, for we have no serious biography of Mme de Polignac.

Well, Du Barry had a faction for her - the Richelieu/d'Aiguillon faction. who did the Polignacs have? the king liked them, and they were related to Maurepas, but was that a supporting faction?
The Polignacs were related to Maurepas? How?

I have a question -

I've read a few biographies of Marie Antoinette, and in these I've read the Duchesse de Polignac's name as Gabrielle and Yolande.

Is there any evidence as to which the Duchesse used herself?

We actually don't know, dear, alas... I personally asked specialists of Marie Antoinette, and they don't know... :( Some biographers called her Gabrielle Martine Yolande, others Yolande Martine Gabrielle... so, what ? Let's add that, in those times, the order of the names did not matter, so that Madame de Polignac could be called Yolande, Gabrielle or even Martine !

One thing is certain : the whole court used to call her "countess Jules", from the name of her husband, in order not to mistake her for her sister in law, Diane, countess de Polignac too.

But did they call her "Jules" ? Why not ? Since they called the queen "Antoine" !

Thanks for clearing that up for me! It's rather infuriating though, not knowing one of the most basic details about her! :?

Indeed... I'd really like to know how our dear queen called her best friend... All that I noticed is that almost all the French authors use "Yolande". The scholars who write in English sometimes use "Gabrielle".

French scholar and writer Chantal Thomas chose "Gabrielle" too...

And "Gabriel" appears among Madame de Polignac's father's names, as well as you can find "Gabrielle" among her dauhgter, Guichette,'s names.

But, here again... so what ?

Yes, it becomes clear that this is the manner in which some good friends wrote to each other, so people should not make an issue of the queen saying similar things to Count Fersen.

You make an excellent point!!!
Please forgive my ignorance, but I was wondering if it is true that she had two children by the King? Or is that just a rumor?
