who were her ladies in waiting in the movie supposed to be?

one of her 'friends' in the movie Count Mercy didn't like and thought they shouldn't be friends. it was the girl who got so drunk when Marie and Axel got to talk for the second time.

i know one of her main ladies was beheaded as well...was that a sophie?

Count Mercy did not approve of Madame de Polignac but not because of drunkeness, but because he saw her as a parvenue. Madame de Lamballe was torn to pieces by the mob....

A parvenu is someone who recently got titles and richess. It is quite despicing. Mercy deeply despiced Mme de Polignac, for he considered she was manipulating Marie-Antoinette for serving her own family interests.

Actually, the Polignacs belonged to French very old nobility, they had "de la naissance" (they were highly born), but they were poor. The king and queen supported them, gave them pensions, charges, titles and money. It was necessary for affording their rank in Versailles, and be worthy of their royal friendships.

Following authors like the Giraut de Coursac and Delorme, Louis XVI encouraged this affection between Marie-Antoinette and Gabrielle de Polignac, for this contributed to distract the queen from politics.

In this view, we can understand why Mercy actually disliked Mme de Polignac so much ! He was angry because he thought her influence on Marie-Antoinette would balance his own, so that Antoinette would no longer remain the hostage of Austrian politics !

Pimprenelle is right. Madame de Polignac was a newcomer to Versailles but both her family (the Polastrons) and her husband's family (the Polignacs) were very old, noble families. She was a very refined and discreet person, raised in a convent and the mother of a family. There is a rumor that Monsieur de Vaudreuil was her lover but that might be just as much in the realm of legend as the Fersen story. Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette entrusted their children to her, and the king respected her so much that he visited her in her home. She was the only one to be so honored, since the king never visited private residences. Louis also wrote to her. The two families were very close.

Pimprenelle is correct when she says that Mercy was afraid of losing the political influence over Antoinette, but that is what Louis intended by encouraging the friendship.

It is also interesting to notice how clever Maria Theresia actually was ! Following Mercy's advises, she began by complaining about Mme de Polignac, calling her "the Polignac". Marie Antoinette replied by specifying how much her husband, the king, appreciated this lady, and Maria Theresia immediately changed her mind. She called Gabrielle "Mme de Polignac". Later, as Antoinette went on talking about the king's affection for Gabrielle, Maria Theresia would even stop bothering her daughter with this story.

She began as a mother talking to her daughter, but Antoinette replied as a queen to an empress. And Maria Theresia obviously got the message right !

Madame de Polastron was indeed one of the queen's ladies-in-waiting.

Here is an article about her:

Here is the second part of the article about Louise. It is interesting to see the actions of Marie-Antoinette and Madame de Polignac in this situation.
