Post Relationship of Gabrielle and Vaudreuil
I know that we've already discussed this matter, but I would like to make a poll about it, to know your opinion... I will not vote yet, because I do not know what to think...After reading your opinions and arguments, I will vote...

Actually, I wonder, dear... I answered "friends", for I did not find the answer I needed. They were cousins, I think, weren't they ? And Vaudreuil was a close friend of Gabrielle's husband.

Nevertheless, I know that almost all the writers say that they were lovers, and that Gabrielle's last son is fathered by Vaudreuil... But don't they tell such inaccuracies about Antoinette ?

I also think that they were from the same family... I don't see why we should believe in the rumours, because, as you say, the same thing was said about Antoinette!

But some accurate writters, who don't agree with the relationship Antoinette-Fersen, agree with the Gabrielle-Vaudreuil's one :?

I chose "Lovers", because all the historians, or almost, affirm it without evoking doubt. But it is true that their relations are developed little, therefore I expect all...

I prefer the version that includes the romance between Gabrielle and Vaudreuil, even if I don't know if it realy existed

I voted "friends." What proof do we actually have for this liaison other than court gossip? Did they openly live together? Were they seen in bed together? I would like to know if there is solid proof. Did Gabrielle's son resemble Vaudreuil? Was Jules cruel to her, or indifferent?

I agree with you, Therese. All we have about Gabrielle are articles linked to Marie Antoinette. For many scholars, Gabrielle is an important character, for she taught the queen about debauchery. Thus, in this view, she must have a lover, musn't she ?

It would be more accurate to study Gabrielle for herself, apart from Marie Antoinette, and to search if, really, Vaudreuil was her lover...

... Vaudreuil, this manipulative, neurotic and somewhat cruel man... What a sad love story it would be...

Gabrielle was such a beautiful woman, it seems she would have had someone like Fersen for her lover, if she had one at all. Are there any pictures of Vaudreuil or of the Duc de Polignac?

I'm going to search in Campan's memoirs, or of others close to her. Maybe they say something about the affair

Madame de Lamballe says in her Memoirs that Madame de Polignac lived in amity with her husband. Did she live with two men at the same time?

I read more than once that it was so at that time, because of the arrange marriages. Husbands and wifes were just parents and friends, they found love outside of the marriage. I know it was so with Roman marriages. See Clodia and Catullus, for instance.

Some even wrote that it would have been ridiculous, in XVIIIth aristocracy, to be in love with your own husband !

However, as far as Gabrielle is concerned, I agree with Therese that writers affirm this liaison without evidences, and relying on court gossips only. And also... why would she choose Vaudreuil, who was so old and had such a bad temper ?

Now all we need is a picture of Gabrielle's son and see if he resembles Vaudreuil. Or would that be too tacky?

 It's difficult to say...

It is true that the evidence concerning a relation in love between Vaudreuil and Polignac does not exist... :?
But I know that certain contemporaries like Besenval leave the doubt... By reading the historians and memories of this time, it is true that they were very close and each time their relation is evoked, but not precisely...
But I think that they could be lovers... a beautiful woman like Polignac with Vaudreuil... who knows? :D

They say 'where there is smoke there is fire'.......but who really knows?
They seem to have had some kind of close relationship and many women are attracted to older grouchy men....true?

But as with the Queen and Fersen I also cannot say Polignac and Vaudreuil had an affair - I don't think we have enough information that is not merely rumor to make a definite vote.
