It was not only the aunts.
Her mother raised her in a way that looked down upon ANYONE of lower birth.
This is also the religious point of view of the time.

Certainly, religious scruples made the Du Barry distasteful to her but Mesdames Tantes did all in their power to prevent Antoinette from talking to her and driving a rift between MA and Louis XV that would be damaging. About looking down on anyone of lower rank, I cannot help but think about Beaumarchais' line in the 'Marriage of Figaro' about how just being born doesn't mean you deserve special treatment.

Her mother did raise her to look down on the lower classes, however, I think prostitutes were especially looked down upon. Her mother had a "decency" squad to prevent anything obscene going on.

"Looking down" might not be the correct term here, because it implies disdain and contempt for those less fortunate than she, which her mother would NOT have wanted her to have. The Empress even encouraged Antoinette to speak to Madame du Barry. Antoinette was merely trying to be moral, as she saw it, in her own adolescent way. She saw Madame du Barry as being slut who had too much power over the King. This violated her sense of justice. The fact that she did a lot to help the poor shows she did not have contempt for them, but rather a deep concern.

i dont think MA looked down on people, if she did then why did she help so many? it was more that her mother led her against the idea of "affairs" because of MA's father. she looked apon du Barry as a harlot.

That's all right, at least versailles understood you enough to try to figure out what you really meant to say. ;)

I was under the impression that Maries' mother wanted her to talk to Du Barry only to keep the King happy. With the king really liking Antoinette, their "hostel" if I may, relationship would put the King in an odd position at times. Knowing how unstable Maries' position was at that time, her mother wanted Marie to do nothing that could jeopardize it. So, being friendly with Du Barry would make/keep the King happy. So it was for that reason her mother would nag her to be friendly to Du Barry, not for Maries' sake or Du Barrys', but to keep the King happy.

Please, if I am wrong in this, or others disagree that's ok! I love to hear other opinions, and especially when I am wrong about something I want to know. :)

Yes, you are correct. (Except that she was not called "Marie." She was indeed called "Antoinette." )

I meant that she shyed away from the lower classes by her mothers instruction.
But Du Barry was a different story.

Perhaps that didn't being away from poorer people didn't help Antoinette in the long run, because it kept her isolated.
