Post PRINCESS ELIZABETH
What were the times that Princess Elizabeth actually comforted her sister, Marie? They did, after all, had a wonderful friendship and a beautiful sisterhood.

There was the time, when Du Barry would pick on her and Marie looked up to her, and of course, during the imprisonment, but what about the Queen when she was in stress of Lamballe's death?
Knowing the Queen, she would lock herself in her room but do you think Elizabeth found a way in to comfort her of her hysteria??

Marie-Antoinette regarded Elisabeth as her sister, and had much regard for her.
During their imprisonment in the Temple, she also let her with her children, and in her last letter Marie-Antoinette entrusts her children to Elisabeth.
I think that they were helped mutually to face the difficulty. Elisabeth was a real nun and she had to advise Marie-Antoinette I think.
However, they disputed also a little, because Marie-Antoinette reproached her for being too talkative and not to hide her thoughts... because indeed in policy they did not agree: Elisabeth was more reactionary and she was for a forced reaction of Artois. Marie-Antoinette in a letter explains that she tries to avoid to see Elisabeth some times because if not they dispute. But without these little arguments about policies, they were very friendly. :D

I was under the impression that Antoinette and Elisabeth had always had a good relationship but that Antoinette and Clothilde, Louis's other sister, did not. Am I right in remembering the Elisabeth eventually went to the guillotine too?

Really? So she lived for a few years longer than Louis and Antoinette then. That must have been horrible - knowing what had happened to them and knowing that it was a distinct possibility that it would happen to her too.

Here is a thread about Madame Elisabeth with much information about her. She and Antoinette had their ups and downs, but ultimately, they were devoted to each other.

Thanks. It's good to see that Antoinette and her sister in law had such a close relationship. I gather too that Elisabeth never spoke any word of blame when the revolution occured, even though Antoinette extravagence must have seemed rather excessive to her given her own nature.

Actually, Elisabeth spent as much money or more than Antoinette, especially on shoes.

Really? I hadn't realised that .. I had this impression of her as being pious and unworldly. Guess I got that wrong ;).

She was pious and unworldly but she was also a princess of France and had to dress like one. Maybe she was on her feet a lot, and went through shoes quickly. She also had many charities and pensioners and much of her money went to help others.

Can someone add this thread to one of the two others that are already started? We have three threads going about Madame Elisabeth.
