Marie-Antoinette was not anywhere near as extravagant as the king's brothers and some other members of the royal family. People criticized her for her love of simple attire and when she dressed like a queen she was also criticized. She was once again singled out as a target when she did a lot to cut back expenses in the royal household.

I agree with you, dear Therese. Marie Antoinette was not responsible at all for her terrible fate. She was not that extravagant, nor was she that frivolous. People blamed her for whatever she did, as Chou pointed. It is her reputation that caused her fate, not her actions.

absolutely! she just couldn't win! when she adopted the gaulle style dresses (which i'm sure cost less than the courtly gowns!), she was ridiculed for bringing down the standards of court dress. the phrase 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' springs to mind. i always see her as a tragic scapegoat for all that was going wrong in france at the time. louis the 14th spent far more than she ever did (please correct me if i'm wrong!) but it was convenient that she was from another country to accelerate the french into revolting. :(

as for fersen, she wouldn't have consummated the relationship due to being a devoted catholic and monarchist i think.

can you add a "who cares" option to the poll?

Dorit,

You could take the position that "who cares" is in the lead.
So far 19 votes to the 3 choices, but 224 have not voted
of 243 members here. They would seem not to care.

As I said before, I subscribe to Bertierre's view - whether or not they had an affair, it's the question of whether people thought they had an affair or didn't that counts. that's what made the political difference.

It's all politics.
It was and it still is now.
