Post Did Joseph II visit Madame Du Barry?
I'm reading Carolly Erickson's To the Scaffold and in chapter 13 it says while he was visting MA for the first time he went to visit Madame Du Barry at Louveciennes. Is this true? Has anyone read this in other books? Also, I'm thinking about buying a book I saw on Madame Du Barry, I don't remember the author, but if anyone has read anything on her would you say it's worth reading?

Thanks!

He did see her. However he was by no means tempted. He called her "plain"

Yes, I believe that's true. She told him shyly that his visit an excessive honour, and he gallantly replied something like "But Madame, Beauty is always the queen" ("Mais Madame, la Beauté est toujours reine !"). I wonder whether that visit irked the queen, because she must have heard of it.
