Post August Family
In all the books that I have so far read, they refer to MA and Louis as the "most August family". Could anyone explain this to me?

I believe that "august" in this sense means venerable or eminent ... the highest family in the land so to speak.

The term August comes, of course, from the name Augustus, who was one of the greater Roman Emperors. By MA's time it came to mean--- Supreme, Most high, above all others, god-like etc.

"One grows accustomed to one's enemy, and by making it familiar one loses the desire to get rid of it...." Marquise de la Tour du Pin, in a letter to her friend Mme. de Duras.
