I would like to know more about the Comtesse d'Artois, wife of Charles d'Artois...Was she an extravagant, selfish and beautiful aristocrat or was she discret...? Did she had an happy mariage (I don't think so, Charles was in love with madame de Polastron)? Who were her friends (maybe Gabrielle de Polignac and Antoinette?

thank you!

Marie-Thérèse de Savoie (1756 - 1805) is the sister of Marie-Josèphe de Savoie, who is the wife of the Comte de Provence. Her father is the King Victor-Amédée III de Sardaigne, and her mother is Marie-Antoinette Ferdinande d'Espagne. She was married to the Comte d'Artois in 1773. But her husband didn't love her, because he was in love with Rosalie Duthé, Louis Contat and Louise d'Esparbes de Polastron. Marie-Thérèse wasn't beautiful, she was shy, and she didn't like the life in Versailles. The couple had 4 children: The Duc d'Angoulême who will be married with Madame Royale, the Duc de Berry who will be married with Marie-Caroline de Naples, and Mesdemoiselles Sophie and Marie-Thérèse d'Artois, who will died very young.

She had probably good relationship with Marie-Antoinette, but, she was so shy that she couldn't be a very good friend for her. But, she had complicated relationship with her sister Marie-Josèphe. The Comtesse de Provence wanted absolutely to see Marie-Thérèse at Versailles, and she had influenced her father, who wanted to married his youngest daughter, Marie-Anne de Savoie. But, in Versailles, Marie-Josèphe wanted to influence her sister, and Marie-Thérèse didn't like it. She wanted to leave this influence. That's why the 2 sisters don't like themselves very well.
Marie-Thérèse died in exile, 20 years before that her husband will become King of France.

In Versailles, Marie-Thérèse was accusated of adultery, but I think that is only rumour. She didn't have the temperament for this.

All, true, V-A! The Comtesse d'Artois was unattractive and neglected by her husband. There were rumors that she consoled herself with a groom, but they are probably false. She was close to Madame Elisabeth. She had two sons, Angouleme and Berry, and a daughter, who died in childhood.

With a lowly retainer of some kind - I had heard a groom in the stables, but not certain.....

Here, the most famous picture of Marie-Thérèse de Savoie, by Gautier d'Agoty. This picture is in Versailles. The countess shows the picture of his mother, Marie-Antoinette of Spain. The bust represents her husband, the count of Artois.

And here, the Countess of Artois with her children, the duke of Angoulême, the duke of Berry and Madame Sophie, in 1783.

There are some people who said that she had and other daughter, who died very young. But this is quite disputed.

Very interesting! Thanks for posting such wonderful portraits, V-A!!!

Now someone needs to start a thread about her sister, the Comtesse de Provence, Marie-Josephine de Savoie (if we don't already have one)! Some people say she was never pregnant at all; others say she had miscarriages, but never gave birth.

We can to create a topic about the Comtesse de Provence. I'am interested in her. But I don't think that she had miscarriages. I have always believe that she died like a virgin.

Yes, that is what I originally heard, too, that she died as a virgin.
