The poor Duchess of Berry did not have an easy life, especially following her attempts missed to save monarchy (and the jail), and following her inaccuracy with the royal family, her who was maried once more with an Italian Count :?

Charles X and the Duchess of Angoulème did not want any more to see her and recognize her like member of the royal family.

One of my favorite people!!! Thank you for starting a thread about Caroline!! She was high-spirited and more like Marie-Antoinette than Marie-Therese - she was Maria Carolina's granddaughter, after all. It is a very romantic story how she secretly married her Italian count Ettore Luchesi-Palli in Rome, and then went to Brittany to try to regain the throne for her son. She ended up hiding in a chimney in a farmhouse and almost was burned alive. She never lost her courage and her dignity, even during her imprisonment in the fortress of Blaye, where she was forced to give birth in front of the guards.

Charles X stripped her of her SAR (HRH) because he felt she had disgraced the family by her secret marriage. She and Marie-Therese had always quarrelled, although M-T ended up raising Caroline's older children, Henri and Louise. The two sisters-in-law were eventually reconciled, and would spend their winters in Venice together, until Therese died in 1851.

Caroline is one of the main characters in the novel "Madame Royale" although she does not enter until the middle of the story, but then she upstages everyone else.

Some biographycal notes:

Marie Caroline Ferdinande Louise de Bourbon, was born in Palermo at November 5th in 1798. She was the daugther of Francis I of the Two Sicilies and Marie Klementine of Austria.

In 1816, with 18 years, Caroline married with the youngest son of the Comte d'Artois, Charles Ferdinand, duc de Berry, at Notre-Dame de Paris.

With the Duc de Berry, Caroline had three children:
1. Louise d'Artois (1819-1864), later duchesse de Parme;
2. A baby that died;
3. Henri d'Artois (1820-1883), duc de Bordeaux, and comte de Chambord.

In 1820 her husband was shot at the ópera.

Caroline was a great artistic patron.

In 1830, she went to exile, returning in 1832 and trying to organize a revolution in the Vendée. But the plan failled and she was arrested. Some years later (?) she was released and went to Belgique. The Bourbons refused to accept the Duchesse de Berry, and then she went to Austria, where she lived until her death in 1870.

Correct me if I'm wrong! :wink:

You are correct Jules, except she was only in prison for about six months. They released her after she had her baby.

The Bourbons did receive her and correspond with her; she would come to visit her children, even when they were staying in Prague.

Chateaubriand always flirted with her, calling her a "crazy, Italian tight-rope artist." She had a wonderful singing voice and could sing and play any operatic song after hearing it only once.

Oh, yes, Berry was indeed stabbed on the steps of the Opera house by the madman Louvel the barrelmaker, whom he forgave as he was dying.

Those are fantastic pictures!! Thanks!!

«Maria Carolina fou creada, pel rei Carles X de França, comtessa de Rony, l'any 1830.» in wikipedia.

Tradution: «Marie Caroline was created, by King Charles X of France, Comtesse de Rony at the years of 1830.»

When her husband was murdered was she Duchesse de Berry at the same?

Was she a Princesse des Deux-Siciles, Duchesse de Berry, Comtesse de Rony and had she the titles of her husband (how was an italian prince, duke and count)??? If it's this way, she was a Princesse, Duchesse and Comtesse! :?:
