We used to have a thread about the king's brothers, but it has disappeared. So I will start one on the Comte de Provence. Here is an article about him.

Great thread! What was the Comte de Provence's childhood like and his relationship with his siblings as a child?

I imagine he was a bit of a bully. I could be wrong though.

Comte de Provence didn't like his older brother, Louis XVI. He thougt he would be better king than his brother. But I don't know what he thought about comte d'Artois.

Provence thought Artois was a pious idiot.

... a pious idiot ? Is there a religious connotation ? Or does it simply mean "a pure idiot" ?

Sorry, Therese, even with my dictionnary, my English sometimes is too short !

Provence saw Artois as an "idiot" who happened to be a pious one. Provence did not have a high regard for Artois' intellectual abilities. Provence was liberal; Artois was very conservative and later became quite devout.

Thank you, Therese, I did not know about Artois' late devotion. As far as I knew, he was a quite debauched boy... so that I really did not get your sentence !

Now I see !

Oh, yes, he was so pious that there was a rumor (after he became king) that he had secretly become a bishop and was offering Mass at the Tuileries. He led Eucharistic processions and passed laws against descrating the Blessed Sacrament. He never gave up his cards, though.....

Last week I posted this article which tells of the moment of Artois' conversion. He turned to Abbe Latil, who never left his side, and who later became an archbishop, at Artois' request

So interesting Therese! I had always thought of Artois as an extravagant womanizer! :o But, people do change I suppose... :D

Madame de Polastron was a catalyst for positive change.

A false person. After he got information about collapsing of the king and queen's escape to Varennes, he just had been, according to de Bouille, quite satisfied. His ambitions were more important than anything else, eventual dreams about the crown could come true...even it wasn't the right time.
