Post Negative points of Coppola's film
I hadn't the oportunity to see the film, because it only will came out on October...But I'm desperate to see it, even if it's not the perfect movie.

But what are the negative aspects of the film? Because of I've read, I don't like the way that Antoinette is played... But are there any historical errors?

Yes, there seem to be many errors. Although I have not yet seen the film either, it seems that they are making many historical assumptions.

1) It gives credance to the whole 'Marie and Axel von Fersen' affair, which we cannot actually say ever happened.

2) It seems to concentrate on only one aspect of the queen's life, such as her gambling, expenditures on shoes, etc.

3) Although not an inaccuracy, it is set to rock n' roll, which, in my opinion, seems to be in bad taste.

4)On the website, it is listed that the Comtesse d'Artois was a 'friend' of M.A., when they were not particularly friendly. It also says that the Comte d'Artois' son was the Comte d'Provence's.

I'm sure there are quite a few more, but you get the idea!

Absolutely right ! Let's add that it is full of historical inaccuracies and chronological mistakes... which are not always "wanted" by the director, as she tried to make us believe afterwards ! The Provence's child is the greatest one, a pure gem !

It has rather showing sensational pictures than true events, for instance this passage from Austria to France. We now all know that Mme Campan's story of Antonia put nacked is pure invention. Never mind ! How could miss Coppola resist such a shot ?

I would also like to add a word about Mme de Polignac, since this character moves me so much. She is portrayed just a frivolous girl, sharing with Antoinette frivolous feasts and pastries. Nothing serious, nothing deep...

But nothing deep happens in this Hollywood rose marshmallow film !

Yes, we can see Madame de Provence to give birth to the duke d'Angoulême!

And the actors aren't credible. Madame du Barry burps with table, Madame de Polignac is the best friend of Madame de Lamballe, Louis XV looks like a farmer, Louis XVI is so insipid etc.

It sounds like they are going to represent her as an 18th century Paris Hilton! Mon Dieu.

Coppola didn't do her research on the excellent biographies of Simone Bertière, Petitfils etc. :(

What a pity greater care was not taken to present the truth.

I have to wait till next month to see the movie. I have to admit that since I heard about it I have been looking forward to seeing it. I fear that this was a lost opportunity on the part of the director to make a really great movie :(

Yes, a 40 million dollar lost opportunity, to be sure. What a waste! with the right director and a decent screenplay and it could have been so good.

Yes, Mme de Polignac is shown as a wild girl who gets Antoinette into mischief, whereas in reality, Gabrielle was several years older, dressed with simple dignity, was the mother of a growing family, and had a calming effect on the queen, which is why Louis XVI encouraged their friendship and befriended her himself.

In the french version, Gabrielle's voice is...horrible. We can compare it with a drunkhard's voice.

Oh, I can see they made her as vulgar as possible. Awful, since Gabrielle was charming and refined, with her occitan accent.

I agree. In the film, we can see that Gabrielle run after all the men, although Madame de Polignac was really refined...

Yes, indeed! One of the main characteristics of Madame de Polignac was her discretion, so that even the very-secretive Louis XVI felt safe confiding in her. Her private life remained private and did not give scandal.

A pity that almost everyone in this world looks at a good local gossip. Especially, in the old days in France where "sexual affairs" and "homosexuality" were a trend.

Polignac I think besides Marie of course, has very, very little credit.
Instead of her being a strong individual that helped the Queen tremendously in her times of when she was least indomitable, she was there. Now she is looked at as a bisexual, cruel women who took part of Marie's private life associated with evil and vulgerness.

I don't think it's only because people think \this is true about her. I think it's what people like, after all, sex sells. They don't care for the true historical fact since they consider it boring they want entertainment but however, this is ridiculous considering the truth in history is always the best. :D
