I also hope I can soon watch it ! Sounds like a true historical movie... even if the actress does not look like Marie Antoinette at all... once again ! Oh, give us back Ute Lemper !

Good find, York!

Did anyone see this on Quebec TV on Dec 21 or 22?

If you visit the website it is quite interesting how they make a Marie Antoinette movie in Montreal. In many of the still there is no background at all but what they seen to do is justapose on that zero background the setting they wish which are stored in the computer.

So, my guess is that when you see the movie it may look like it was filmed on location but it wasnt and thus done at a fraction of the cost of Coppola's movie.

Axel

Yes, Axel... They also say that the script relies on historical accurate information and on authentic sources such as letters... Karine Vanasse says that she read several books about Marie Antoinette.

Thus, other big differences with Coppola's movie ! The main actress knows her subject, they care about historical accuracy, and there is a script, after all !

It is scheduled on French tv too... but God only knows when !

I finally got from amazon.fr the French DVD of this Canadian production with Chantal Thomas as historical consultant.

It is technically quite stunning when you think that ALL scenes are virtually recreated: just the actors and a few pieces of furniture are real. It really seems shot on location.

As a movie (a docufiction?) it is far too sketchy and superficial (just a succession of key moments in Marie Antoinette's life commented by a voice-over with a few dialogue by the actors) to be absorbing. The acting is overall competent with Canadian actress Karine Vanasse really quite appreciable as the queen (her final reading of the testament letter is moving).

No Austrian childhood is shown: the movie starts just before the queen leaves her prison for the scaffold and starts remembering her first arrival in Versailles.

The film is historically quite valid (facts and period costume design are respected), even though Marie Antoinette is described as being a little too "tête à vents" even in her mature years. I also found one big historical error: Marie Antoinette is shown in the Conciergerie with both her children (the dauphin is taken from her in the Conciergerie).

Finally a question: The narrator in the movie states that Fersen, being a very good friend of the queen (their affair is not taken for granted), had a permanent room at Trianon. Never heard of this. Is it true?

Thanks for this breaking review, York ! !

This movie has Chantal Thomas for consultant ? This could explain why it is historically accurate ! :D As well as this Fersen thing... finally a movie that does not fall into the arms of romanticism...

No Austrian childhood ? Too bad... It is so important for understanding Antoinette's psychology...

This mistake about her children being in the Conciergerie is a terrible one, however... too bad too... :?

I am looking forward for receiving my DVD... I can't wait, now ! :D Thanks again, dear York !

For your question about this famous room... Actually, historians don't know. Would it be in Versailles, first of all ? Or in Trianon ? I guess the whole thing rely on a note in Fersen's diary, once again, and a letter sent to this "Josephine", asking for a Swedish stove.

Would Fersen talk like that to the Queen of France ? And where would be this room ? Since they don't even found its location... Once again, people are so anxious about finding evidences of this purpoted liaison...

Mrs Albanel once said that there were no secret rooms in Versailles...

I finally received the DVD last week... I liked this film... the actors are rather credible, and Marie-Antoinette is well represented.
There are some errors... but they are rare thus it is not too disturbing :D
