I've saw this film, and I've adore it! :D I personaly think that Lady Lyon would be a perfect Gabrielle de Polignac!

"Barry Lyndon" was one of the most authentic films EVER as far as costumes go. The hairstyles were based on actual designs by Marie-Antoinette's hairdresser Leonard.

They used wires and hair extensions, too.

Jules ? In which way do you mean Barry would be a perfect Gabrielle ? Because he just let his life flow, and does not take it in his hands ? I don't get it exactly... but it is an interesting idea !

Anyway, I loved the movie too ! I think Lady Lyndon appearing in the powedred light, with her brown violet dress and her brow violet hat, just looks like Marie-Antoinette... :D

I can't resist some more pics...

Sorry Pimprenelle, I only read this know!

I was refering to Lady Lyon, because I imagine Gabrielle as Lady Lyndon...Her hair, her face, her eyes...Even if Gabrielle had blue eyes and dark hair, I think that this Lady Lyon would be a perfect Gabrielle (In Coppola's film, Rose Byrne was physically well choosen. She was very similar to the famous portait where Gabrielle is painted by Vigée Le-Brun, were she have an "angel face" do you know?)

It is a very good movie. I saw it many years ago. It reminded me of the directorial style of Roman Polanski in "Tess of the D'Urbervilles". Quite good.

The movie was flawless. A masterpiece. ( so flawless that I'm at a loss for words !)

I definitely would like to see this also, I remember when this movie was made,....and there was quite a stir about it, as a lot of it was was filmed in candlelight to give the authentic effect of the "look" of the time, the powder and rouge, even on the men. The directer was obsessed with captureing what the people really looked like at the time, and the effect in the lighting of the time. That is fascinating that they used Leonards actual styles....probably makeup recipies too. As I remember, they used no modern cosmetics.

I thought it was a visually stunning film, but it struck me as emotionally aloof, for the most part. (Perhaps this was intentional on Stanley Kubrick's part?) I did find the scenes where Barry Lyndon violently spanks his stepson and his duel with the stepson very involving, but it was very hard for me to connect to the characters for much of the film.

Love the way they filmed the candlelight though!
