On Saturday I wiil take part in a guided tour of the little known Désert de Retz.

This is an 18th century landscaped garden created by François Nicolas Henri Racine de Jonquoy in 1774. It has now largely fallen into disuse, but has been partly restored and can only be visited during a guided tour in the summer. Of particular interest are a number of "follies" which were the fashion of the time, and were all the rage across the channel. These follies took all different forms and the most famous of all at Retz is the "maison colonne" which seems almost futurist in its' design. Take a look on Wikipedia. This amazing construction was the owner's summer residence and despite its' excentric external apperance, was sumptuously decorated with 18th centuy salons inside. Famous visitors included MA in August 1781, Gustave III who spent 6 weeks there in 1784, Madame du Barry in 1776, Benjamin Franklin, Joseph II, the Prince de Ligne, Thomas Jefferson....I shall be happy to walk in the Queen's footsteps once more and at exactly the same season. :)

Enjoy yourself, it sounds fascinating! Is it too much to ask for a photo, Baron? Merci!

Well I managed it but the stupid photo is the wrong way round. Too bad you'll just have to out your head on one side, and don't blame me for any cricked necks!

This is the famous "cracked" or broken" house at Retz, the architecture of which was to say the least avant garde with an intentional rift down the middle of the structure. This futurist 18th century building was the main residence of the park and contained sumptuously furnished and decorated 18th salons! Gustave II stayed here for a few weeks, and there were a number of illustrious visitors, including MA on a number of occasions!
