How wonderful that would be! We, fans of M.A. from this forum, could meet and be alone at Versailles! :D

The room in which she cries in the movie wasn't one of Marie Antoinette's.

james, everything in versailles, in the movie, was fake except the hall of mirrors, the chapel, and the salon of hercules....
and the petit trianon rooms in the movie were fake as welll.

Honestly, I doubt that Versailles is ever less crowded.

It is difficult to see Versailles without too many tourists when one lives abroad or even when one lives in Paris. However it is not impossible. The tour that I will go on on the 3rd June visits some of the hidden places. I imagine that we will see the little passageways connecting the state rooms, maybe bits of the private appartments, perhaps even the curved roof of the Galérie des Glaces from the other side, supported as it is by buttresses linking it to the main structure. There is just room to pass along a narrow passage all the way along the curved roof of the gallery, I saw that on a TV documentary. Otherwise its' a mystery tour for me. If you want some tips how to commune in relative peace with the Queen, then you have to visit outside the tourist flow. Last summer I went to Trianon at least three times where I spent an hour almost completely alone in her gardens, arriving after 1900 and the guards don't even bother to check up on you at that time. I stood on her balcony outside the boudoir, I wandered around the hamlet, the Pavillon Français, the grotte, the Belvedère and Temple d'Amour like a free spirit. I still cannot quite believe that I didn't see her ghost! Otherwise for inspiring and much more intimate visits of the chateau, away from the hordes of tourists, then join the "Society of the friends of Versailles" who arrange theme visits*, or quite simply ring up the chateau and ask for the list of "visites conférences", which are magnificent guided tours on particular themes, and include for example the Queen's privatr appartments or the "hidden places" tour I am going on. If any of you come over to Paris, I don't mind helping you. Any friend of the Queen is a friend of mine. :D

* My highlight was five minutes one night, all alone, in a candlelit (electric candles) Galerie des Glaces, pacing the length of the gallery, up and down, tears of joy in my eyes. That was quite awe inspiring, the only noise that of my footsteps. That was a visit organized one winter evening by the "Friends of Versailles" to see the exhibition "When Versailles was furnished with silver""
