Then what was she doing in there the night the revolutionaries surrounded Versailles?

Thanks LouisXVI, I didn't know that about her rooms. I just assumed she slept in the Queen's chamber (I am new to the french Monarchy). That photo of the bathchamber is great.
I guess the last floor plan I posted, would be correct with the listing of Marie-Antoinette's apartments.

I do not know if she was in that room the night of Oct. 5, but I do know that the great Chambre de la Reine was not meant to be slept in, but merely for show and to receive foreign dignitaries. It was in this room where the Queen would commence with the formal lever(awakening) and dressing, but she didn't actually sleep in it.

LouisXVI do you know where the secret passage way between the Queen and king's apartments was located? I can't tell from the plans. On another board I was told it was behind the Hall of Mirrors.

That's right. The Queen's bedroom is linked by a secret passage to the King's. The passage overlooks the inner courtyard. Looks like we have the same interest in floorplans, hmm? What I really want to find is one of the courtiers' apartments, and to see where they were in relation to everything else.

thanks, I think now I know where the passage was located. Seems we do have the same interest in floor plans :D . I don't know why I just like looking at the plans and figuring out where everything was.

I've never seen a plan with the courtier's apartments listed either.
On this message board (I'l post the link below)
Someone posted this floorplan

http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/175/ ... ge2gi0.jpg

This plan list, in the purple section, of another King's bedchamber. I was wondering, since Marie-Antoinette didn't use the Chambre de la Reine to sleep in, did the King do the same?

Also it has the apartment of Madame de Maintenon listed next to the Queen's, do you know who this would have been?

the message board, it has quite a few plans of versaille, but I'm sure you may have seen them, they are similar. (it is a good board, it is in French)

You are right, jadean, I do not think the King slept in the formal Kings chamber. You see, #20 in the king's private apartments, is the bedchamber. This was a custom of many royal families of Europe, to have a very formal opulent chamber that was not really used. The bed I think represented the State (in a weird way!) and also represented the furthering of the royal lineage. It was more symbolic than anything.

Madame de Maintenon was the second wife of Louis XIV (two monarchs prior). She was the governess of the Dauphine of France, Louis XIV's daughter (which I think explains the close proximity of her rooms to those of the Dauphine on the ground floor.) Anyway, she also nursed Louis' first wife Marie-Therese while she was ill, during which time, Louis XIV fell in love with her. When Marie-Therese died, he marries Maintenon, but it was not made public, because she was not a royal, and thus couldn't truly be recognized. Wow, I sound like a history book...

Thank you also for the versailles forum, it is most intriguing...

In case you are interested, I also found the plans of the mistress Madame du Barry's appartments, and pictures of those rooms:

They are located right above the Louis XV's private rooms, and are connected by a staircase (quite convenient!)

She most certainly was, and the door to the passage which actually leads to the Chambre de Roi is shown in this picture, which MA used to escape that night, which means she was in the Chambre de la Reine, and her husband was in the Chambre de Roi.

thanks for the information, you are like a history book! I did not know that about Madame Maintenon, I knew that Louis XIV married in secret but wasn't sure who. Those photos are great, especially the last one of Madame DuBarry's. I hadn't seen many photos of her rooms.

Thanks for posting the picture of the door way to the passage Monsieur Andre, that is a great shot of the door! you can really see the details of the print on the wall as well. I love it, thank you again for posting that. I have never seen a photo that shows the passage door in the king's room though.

Has anyone seen a floor plan for the Grand Trianon, been searching but no luck?

The Versailles forum is great, I actually got the link from someone on this board.

I'm sorry jadean, I cannot come up with floor plans of the Grand Trianon at this point. I even looked on that versailles forum culture, and they do not seem to have them. Though perhaps, if you joined that website, they could get them for you? It seems as if they have everything under the Sun King there!

Here are the plans for a floor in the Petit trianon, it was the attic floor in 1786:

Yes the King's apartments are on the far right of the floor plan. Here's a picture of his bedroom (the room in the middle):

I love the bed! :D

That is a beautiful bed, you always post great photos LouisXVI. I asked on the Royal Forum message board about the Queen's apartments, it sometimes takes awhile on there for a reply, hopefully someone will be able to tell us about them.

Do you know where the children's rooms were located?
