depending on titles given previosuly, so lets say for instance, you have a family. lets use the house of Noailles.
there was a comtesse de noailles.
a comte de noailles.
a duc de noailles.
and a duchess.

so it is a family.

but what i think youre reffering to is the situation with comte de provence and the comte de artoies and louis XVI being the duc de berry.
a duc is higher than a comte.
my father being a duc, and i a comte, not having received an official title yet, would be lower than he.
so if the duc is taken, then a comte you would be.
get it?

if you need me to re explain just ask :]

While all the offspring of a royal family are princes and princesses with variations on the titles from country to country (eg. in Austria archduke/archduchess, in Russia grand duke/ grand duchess, etc), not all offspring of a non-royal noble family bear titles.
