I am astounded that the last of Marie Antoinette's trees is to be cut up for paper. Surely they could have made some souvenirs or something from it? I'm sure there is a large enough market. I wonder if the tree had belonged to Voltaire or Danton or someone if it would be treated with the same disregard.

It is very sad. Poor MA - the last living connection gone.

I heard the tree was planted long before Marie Antoinette's arrival, in 1681. I don't know is it true. The tree had been damaged by a storm in 1999 and then it desiccated for good and all. That's why it was cut.

There are still one or two contemporary trees standing from MA's time in the gardens of Trianon. The one just in front of her boudoir is from around 1786 I think, she would have seen it as a sapling!
