I was lucky to spend a wonderful evening at Versailles yesterday, watching the Haendel opera "Julius Caesar" in the Royal Opera House.

Inaugurated on the wedding day of MA and the Dauphiin in 1770, it has remained incredibly intact and after a major refurbishment it is a quite extraordinary venue.

Yesterday I really did profit from the ease with which I could walk around during the entractes to explore the theatre.

I even sat for ten minutes quite alone in the Royal Loge, with its' beautifully painted interiors and with its gilded grille to close the loge off from view if necessary. It was quite a feeling to sit where Louis XVI and MA sat, with that same view over that same stage. That opera house saw some momentous events, the wedding dinner and the fateful night when the two regiments dined together on a large table set up on the stage in October 1789, days before the mob descended on Versailles.

Wow Baron. Soo envious of your ten minutes alone in the Royal Loge!
