Post Auction
This will be an interesting week for me.

All week there is an important antiques auction in Paris and I have seen two items which interest me exceedingly, and which could seriously hurt my wallet if I decide to go for it!! :) I will be on the phone to the auction room during the sale...from my office!!

A letter or note, written by her secretary and clearly signed "Marie Antoinette' with that inimitable signature that we see on her last letter....the date 20th November 1789, so she was at the Tuileries already. The note authorizes an extra money allowance for two of her valets.

A painting of MA as Dauphine, the really sweet one with the rosy cheeks, doe like innocent blue eyes and hair in a bunch, painted in 1770 by the school of Drouais (who painted the original). With its original frame (Louis XV) and canvas.

Prices will no doubt escalate as usual.

Good luck to you, then! I hope you will be able to carry these two items. The note can be very precious. Do you have a photo of it?

Baron, this is very exciting! Where do the items in the auction come from? Someone's estate? How are they authenticating them?
What range do you expect that your items to come in at? I know, alot of questions....but I love, love, love auctions - and I am a ruthless bidder - if I decide I want it, I'm getting it!

Well, whatever happens, I do hope that the new owner will eventually pass it temporarily to the Louvre and National French Archives to record and make a digital copy or prints of it, if it has not done so in the past.

But good luck, Baron - and if you do get it, do show us!

The items are clearly authenticated and come from some famous guy's estate. It is quite a collection.

There is an amazing tric trac table, with a beautiful ornate cover.

The price range for the letter is between 400 and 600 but will go for much more. It is clearly signed by the Queen, her signature eaxctly as on her last letter.

As for the Drouais its' between 6000 and 8000 EUR. I have the money in savings but its' a huge step to actually bid that kind of money. But why leave it in the bank when you can use it to buy soemthing that gives such daily pleasure? Objects like this don't lose value. That's what I tell myself! And I've always wanted one such extravagant reminder of the Queen in my flat!

You can see all the objects by going on the Groz et Delletrez website and look at the Paul Louis Weiller sale. You can even bid against me online!! :(

Or even this! http://www.gros-delettrez.com/html/fiche.jsp?id=1491977

Is this it? http://www.gros-delettrez.com/html/fiche.jsp?id=1759341 Certainly, the frame too is rather impressive.

That's the one.

It just went for EUR 13.000.

No regrets, that's more than EUR 16.000 with the tax.

Someone is happy.

That was a beautiful little portrait, although quite expensive!
What about the note?

Indeed!

I was the winning bid for a miniature of Marie Antoinette, signed and on ivory, for 80 EUR (100EUR with the tax). Nicely painted, colours a little faded, mid 19th century.

I'll try and take a photo of her. The face is 100% her, very true ressemblance.

Not quite as 'rare' or pricey as the rest of the stuff here, but (elsewhere) I've just purchased three prints - from the late 1800's - of Corday and Antoinette. Beautiful, absolutely.

Can someone remind me how to put a photo here?

Sorry....file size is always too big.

Baron, here's how I do it (Thanks to Anouk for teaching me!).....
After you click "post reply" - scroll down and you'll see "file name" and "file comment" at the bottom. Choose photo from your computer by clicking browse on the "filename" line. Confirm it by clicking "add the file". Submit.
This should work.
