Thank you Adrienne. I really like fans, because they are so pretty and whenever I am drawing an historical person I can just add a fan in their hand and the whole picture comes together.

Does anyone have any interesting pictures of 18th century fans they've seen? In my Majesty Magazine a while back they had an article on the fans of the Queens of England, and that was very interesting. I really like Marie Antoinette's fan in the new movie, the one she gets when she arrives at Versailles, I liked the gold glitteriness of it, and the lovely design.

I am a sort of collector of fans, the late 18th cent fans were often painted and very light and sometimes had political messages in them. in 19th cent the fans became larger and heavier and in Europe with lot of lace and plumes and carved ebony etc. One good resource book for pictures (including La Reine)is for example Susan Mayor's A collector's guide to Fans, first published 1990 by Wellfleet Books a division of book sales inc.Seacus N.J.

Has anyone a picture or more knowledge about Antoinette's fan with a lorgnette (eye-glass)?

I thought this was for fans of the 18 th century, heh. I don't know anything about actual fans but I'd absolutely love to have one - or anything from that period really, am a lover of social history. Can such things be acquired relatively cheaply or do you have to pay tens of thousands?

Well, I'm sure a fan wouldn't be all that expenisive, but if you wanted a dress or a shoe or some other thing of that matter, then yes, it probably would be in the thousands.

The first one looks like the celebrations around first Mongolfière flight over the Tuileries palace in Paris (now destroyed)
