Post subject:  What did Marie Antoinette wear to her execution?

I read that Marie Antoinette wore a white chemise to her execution because she was not allowed to wear her black mourning dress. Was it only a shift, a cap and a fichu? I was thinking about dressing as Marie Antoinette in the outfit she was executed in for Halloween as an homage.

Was is a technical chemise, as in this:

Here is the sketch by David. It's very sketchy, but you can see she's wearing a fichue and it's more than just a plain shift (no way would she go to her execution in her underwear!). It looks like a very simple white dress with the medium-high waistline that you see during the transition to round gowns. If you imagine this dress in white, I suspect it was something like that.

Also, I believe she wore purple shoes. Cool.

That's what I thought as well. I can't find any purple louis heels.

You're in luck. Flats with pointy toes were coming in at the time. They would have had a little kitten heel in 1793 (you don't see full out flats till post-Thermidor), but that's a lot easier to find now!

Yes I am in luck, I'll feel bad for making it accurate but at least people will get the gist of it.

i hate the sketch by David. It looks so mean. I think she would have looked more "unaffraid" at her ex.

I don't like it either she looks pompous!

I don't read her expression as pompous... I read it as both defeated and proud. Everything has been taken from her but her dignity and damned if she'll let them take that. It's not as though she'd be smiling on her way to her execution. I rather detest David, but I think he captured (perhaps unintentionally) her sense of pride (rather than arrogance) to the end.

I heard or read somewhere that she was able to hide one of her chemise dresses, and saved it in case of that day. If it is true... she is truly a fashion icon, I hope I have that much courage(and style) when I go out like that when I die. If that isn't courage, then I don't know what is.

However they wouldn't let her wear her black tattered mourning dress, so she had to change into a chemise, the other one she had was bloody due to hemmorages she had. :(

She had only 2 dresses with her in the Conciergerie and she had worn the black one throughout the trial; the only change available to her was her white dress for her trip to the guillotine. Additionally she had hemorrhaged and the chemise she had been wearing was bloody so in changing into a clean chemise she stuffed the ruined one into a crack in the wall of her cell to avoid the guard's stares and preserve some modesty. She didn't have a dress hidden anywhere to wear for her execution. Her modesty was severely tested as she crossed the courtyard to the tarantass taking her to the Place'--she desperately needed to relieve herself and squatted in a corner of that courtyard. I think she went with dignity to the guillotine; David who drew the final sketch of her was a revolutionary and therefore had a bias. What I see in the sketch is the dreadful and aging circumstances she had so recently and relentlessly been through. Wow. I couldn't do that.
