Does anyone know of any designers producing contemporary garments inspired by the 18th century?? There is an illustrator named Chesley Mclaren who has recently launched a collection entitled Demoiselle, which I thought had some fantastic 18th century touches.

I am still attempting to make a Marie Antoinette dress *sigh*. I must say I fancy your avatar Mrs. B! Thank heaven someone has set up a topic for costumes.

Thanks for that. Not bad for a mere peasant, aye?! I have a Marie Antoinette dress design in the works myself made from fabric I am having specially produced inspired by Marie Antoinette's own. I first gained a penchant for Marie Antoinette after reading Queen of Fashion and then found myself really gripped by the characters, dramas, tragedies, etc of the French Revolution. The 18th century aesthetic of fashion is so sumptuous and such an important one in the chronology of fashion design that I feel it would be a shame to just leave it forgotten in the annals of history and not incorporating it into modern day dress. I think it can be done without actually crossing the line into costume - even though I personally dream of sashaying down a London Underground carriage in 6 feet wide panniered skirt. After the completion of my first project, if it does in fact prove successful I may continue producing more pieces. I have a few ideas bouncing around my little brain that I need to get in to my sketchbook - one being a new take on the Robe a la Polonaise.

Perhaps you can purchase a period pattern and then modernize it. For instance you have a skirt, make it a green satin with a bubble hem and make it poufy, something like that, I don't know. Anyway, I hope it all works out for you!
