Indeed I agree that a monarch has only real merit in living simply and modestly as Louis XVI was known to have done. His wife strayed into moments of extravagant dissipation, as so many other women at court before her. There were few such Queens of France as Radegonde.

Indeed, but what has changed!?

Look at the Russians' forgiving attitude to the unbelievable fortune amassed by Oleg Deripaska, and how he puts his money about!! And they too had a revolution, and have not so long ago come out of communism! Maybe we just can't tolerate women spending money but accept it from men! The husband's fear of his wife's credit card syndrome! :)
