Or so I have been told. According to an article called "The 7 Creepiest Old School Robots" on, our favorite 18th century queen of France had herself a robot. Check the article out (I linked it above. You have a scroll down a little.) and see what I mean. I'm aware that Cracked is hardly the most reputable source in cataloging Marie Antoinette's possessions, but --- well, but nothing. I'm citing as a source. Just interesting, if it's true.

Has anyone else heard about the La Joueuse de tympanon? Because it's news to me.

I have not only heard about it but I have also seen it. It is to be found at the Arts et M├ętiers museum in Paris. I saw it at an 18th century science exhibition at Versailles.

The little figure playing the harpsichord really does ressemble the Queen.

The 18th century produced some quite extraordinary robots or automatons, such as the famous cockerel clock on display at the Hermtage museum in St Petersburg. The head moves, the wings flap, the eyes and beak open and the cock crows.

Very fascinating, thank you Baron. :3 You'd never really think of 18th century denizens as having robots. You really do learn something new every day.
