Post The Mob Arrives!
On this day October 5, 1789 - the mob descended on Versailles. A true night of hell. The following day the royal family was forced to Paris.

It was the last time Marie Antoinette saw her beloved Petit Trianon and probably the last day she ever felt any real peace.

Like Zweig writes, she enjoyed the peaceful park of Trianon that day. Then she became informed about the coming of the mob...
I try to imagine how she felt, watching autumn gardens. Probably she didn't know it was her last day in this beloved park!
Thank you Lilly for reminding us this day.

Post Re: The Mob Arrives!
With hindisght, it all looks such a game of destiny, ot maybe the stuff for a novel. I mean, autumn coming, leaves falling and summer colours fading away...And in the meanhile, her world was about to fade as well, and she didn't know it yet. And just for that last day, for some kind of blessing, she had the chance to enjoy her last moments of peace in the place she loved most.

Yes, I know my imagination is leading me far :) But, in these moments, the historian who's in me slides back, and the dreamer comes in the open...

On this day August 10 - the attack on the Tuileries took place. Such a sad day for the royal family....and many more as well. Bloody, Bloody.

What really happened on that wet October night in 1789 ?
The women had spent all day marching there... soaked to the skin... feet covered in mud.....
Lafayette and his militia didnt get there till midnight... huge A huge crowd built up around the palace... often
angry and threatening..... what did Lafayette do... he
went to a local hotel and immediately fell into a deep sleep.
Of course , in the early hours , ( while Lafayette slept ) security was breached and a bloodthirsty mob broke into the palace and began hunting Marie Antoinette.... who then fled for her life.
The next morning... to placate the angry mob King Louis suddenly announced to the crowd that he would return with them to Paris with his wife and family.
It seems incredible that he made this decision... on the spot.. without consulting anyone... giving in to the mob and then having to travel on a humiliating 8 hour journey to Paris
Marie suffering abuse and threats from the fisherwomen and rough market women...

What should really have happened is Lafayette and his militia should have restored control and order.... violence would have ensued but the crisis would have passed and the King and Queen would be safe and secure in Versailles.
Time and time again we see a weak King .. dithering... unable to make tough decisions and having ... misplaced faith and trust in .. " the French people " or in that case.. the " French Mob "

Marie Antoinette must have despaired at her weak, docile husband

Post Re: The Mob Arrives!
Where ever this post was copied from - the year was 1789. (Not 1769)

LaFayette went to Versailles - he thought everything was under control, THEN he went to get some sleep. He did not send the mob to Versailles and he was not responsible for what ensued.

Louis did not make this decision to go to Paris, "on the spot" and it is doubtful that the Royal family would have been "safe and secure in Versailles".

Marie Antoinette was not the only one who despaired at the indecisive nature of the King.

Accuracy, please!
