Post Varennes
Finally on Friday I shall make the trip to Varennes to follow in the footsteps of the Royal familly and see for myself this fateful place, where the destiny of a Nation changed forever. We will follow in the exact footsteps of this august family, even leaving from the rue de l'Echelle, where Fersen had parked his light horse taxi for the first part of the journey. The road still exists and is near the Louvre. We will dine in Varennes and stay overnight nearby. We have with us the Castelot and Lenôtre books which have photos of the places and are the best documented accounts of the voyage, having used archive reports to retrace the exact voyage. We will even find the bridge where they broke a wheel support and had to wait for it to be mended.

As you can see we will leave as close as posssible to the 20th June to experience the same conditions, hours of daylight, temperature etc :)

Baron, what a fascinating opportunity! It's a lovely idea, and certainly, I've never done that, though I'd love to some time. I know I'm replying to the thread a tad late, but I've only just popped back into the forum from some time ago. You probably have, as have most historians on the Revolution (or graduate students/interested persons), read Tackett's work of When the King Took Flight provides a solid provincial study for the area, and particularly the attitudes, situations and views of Varennes (and surrounding settlements) pre-Revolution and during the Revolution. If you haven't, though, that's a great source.

I have indeed and Lenôtre and Castelot and Mona Azouf. To be honest with you, there's little I don't know about the journey to Varennes, from the point of view of pure detail I mean, without wanting to sound pompous....

As only expected from a working historian/graduate student (I have assumed), but nonetheless, very highly commendable if a student - without meaning to sound condescending. :)
