I uploaded a copy of Marie Antoinette's last letter - Gallery/Miscalleneous.
That is the letter intended for Madame Elisabeth...which never reached her.

so sad, but you've really got to admire her courage in that last letter. even in the worst situation imaginable, she really did prove that she was unafraid.

And here is the document :

I had the chance to see it in reality, when it was exposed at the Hotel de Soubise a few months ago. I was deeply moved...

Surely this letter proves that the queen wasn't a deprived and bad person. Otherwise this letter would have sound different. Reading it you can think about a mature and wise woman.

The document I included in the gallery is a facsimile published in the early 1800s. Unfortunately it is not an exact copy of the original.... Pity all the pictures of the original document are so small it's really difficult to read.

You can read Marie Antoinette's letter on the site I posted, dear Marquise. You'll have the first page, and, clicking on the magnifying glass, you'll have the document bigger.

So, you will see the queen's scripture, and her so peculiar mistakes... I just adore them ! so touching...

Dear Pimpernelle, I hadn't even noticed the magnifying glass...
I initially selected to view the document and was presented with a small reproduction.
This magnifying glass makes things so much better...thank you :-)
This letter is so beautiful: I felt emotional when I read the words MA wrote about her children and about her sadness at leaving her friends behind with their sorrows ("l'idee dans (sic) etre separe pour jamais ,et leurs peines, sont un des plus grand regret que j'emporte en mourant").
The spelling mistakes are touching and should certainly have been left in the 1800s facsimile.

Do you know some people are currently pretending that this letter is an apocryph one ? ... ae00a2bb20

Isn't it terrible ?

We can immediately say that: what these people call "evidence" or "arguments" are only assumptions which come directly from their imagination. These some people who affirm the not-authenticity of this superb letter just wish that one speak about them…
because it is obvious that this letter was indeed written by Marie-Antoinette: one finds there this dignity, this frankness, this kindness, this devotion towards the others and this love for her children, which characterize Marie-Antoinette perfectly.
Thus these people are not to take with the serious one :?

I am shocked by the arguments presented against the authenticity of the letter on the forum "Enigme des Invalides": none of these arguments make any sense - holes in the paper, ink blots and even the mention of the time are all seen as "proof" that the letter is a fake! Interestingly, none of the supporters of that idea think of compairing the letter with other documents recognised as being in MA's hand. Maybe they're afraid to discover that the handwriting is the same as on all other documents I've seen by her.
Let's add that the content is a very good reflection of Antoinette's personality. It is also very typical of the serenity some poeple reach when they know it is the end.
Also I understant that this letter is stored at the Archives Nationales as Antoinette's last letter. The Archives Nationales must have used scientific methods to date the parchment as well as to authentify Antoinette's handwriting. Methods that are far more reliable than silly questionings about the position of a hole in the paper or the size of an ink blot...;)

I don't know how anyone can doubt the authenticity of the letter.
