Creepy is too kind a word for such a diabolical instrument......only a very twisted mind could have invented it.
This is SO painful to see again, and
Innocent Antoinette wrote:
oh my....My God have pity on me!
My eyes have no more tears to cry for my poor children Farewell, farewell!
are words that express incomprehensible
suffering. Rest in Peace beautiful Marie Antoinette.

That isn't *the* blade, is it?! Oh dear. How monstrous that it was kept for all these years...

I highly, highly doubt this is the real blade. 1.) How did Henri Sanson get it? And 2.) I'm sure it was used again after MA's execution. Pffft.

Can anyone tell me in which museum you can find this? It would be of great help... specially to start to investigate a little about it....
Thanks!

Quite the contrary Divine Empress. The Docteur Guillotin was searching for a more humane method of execution to those that existed, which were on the whole barbarous . He was even criticised for the swift efficiency of his machine, which dispatched the victims without undue suffering. Would you have preferred to have been half hanged, then brought back to your senses by a bucket of cold water on the face, drawn on the rack, disembowelled whilst fully conscious and then not so neatly quartered, all fully conscious until that is you lost consciousness?

[color=#800080][i]My dear Baron de Batz,

Naturally, the Guillotine was far more humane and swifter than the other methods as described by You, which are too infernal and barbarous for words.......
So, really, it is comparative.........
But to any gentle, refined and compassionate mind, the guillotine is a diabolical instrument which conjures up images too horrific to contemplate.
Besides, it is to Me the ultimate humiliation to be so disposed of; particularly for a Royal. So, from a mental perspective it was meant to convey this as well.
In addition, I feel that executions in vast numbers were planned, hence an instrument of some efficiency was required, while still portraying that finallity and humiliation. And that Our Dear Marie Antoinette was dealt with in this way............

But yes, You do have a point.........

Yes being executed is never very pleasant....look at Marie Stuart's execution where the executioner blundered and only sliced into her skull the first blow...that one always turns my stomach! Princes died by the sword in England but I would have preferred the guillotine anyday! If I had to choose that is. What I hate about these executions is the lifting of the head after, and the fact that they were often "en masse", and if you weren't first up, you waited and watched, like Madame Elizabeth, the last of fifteen or so victims that day. Nightmare!

Yes, death by guillotine was rapid, but the ceremony that accompanied that death was far from quick. One can just imagine what it meant to pass in a chariot through the streets of Paris, among the insult of the crowd, knowing that you were about to die...

So well put!! The lifting of the head was the ultimate in cowardly humiliations....and so utterly depraved! And then, as you both said, the waiting before it was one's turn to mount the scaffold..... Poor Madame Elizabeth! I guess, no matter how it is viewed, it all ads up to a rather sad saga in history, I don't really understand why the French celebrate it......

It is a very sad fact that uit has been proven~ the mind can take up to 2 MINUTES to die, after being severed from the body. There is no doubt, that when held up above a mob of onlookers, the person could well see and comprehend what had just happened. The thought makes me absolutely SICK.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe the inventor of the guillitone~ Dr Joseph Guillotine, was excecuted with it as well.

If so, that is highly ironic.

He did not die, I believe, at the foot of his own barbaric invention. He died of natural causes, at least that is what I have heard.
