I am a bit confused. It is relatively easy for me to see how they got from Maria Antonia to Antoinette thinking that her Austrian name was not delicate enough. Here's where I get confused, through different books we are told that Marie Leczinska at some point was called Marie Antoinette( source: Queen of Fashion: What Marie Antoinette Wore to the Revolution or could be Madame du Barry: The Wages of Beauty I can't remember right now)

Then we have Madame de Pompadour who was born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson.
Was Antoinette a particularly common name?

(sorry if that has already been discussed, I couldn't find any threads on it.)

Not a problem, I will give more info when I find it! :) Though it's the one book that I don't own, so it may take a bit.
