You are not alone in seeing that as a catalyst Hellou. The way the necklace affair was deliberately manipulated against the Queen and King shows for me that it was part of a strategy to undermine their power, to which the Duc d'Orléans was no doubt no stranger. This movement was already ripe by this time or at least ripening. The fact that the Court went against the King's recommendations and acquitted Rohan was the single most important element. The King was disavowed, the Queen slandered.
