Post Blind in one eye?
I recently read in Desmond Seward's biography of Marie Antoinette that she went blind in one eye. Assuming this is true, what caused her blindness? It must have been pretty tough, even just one eye being blind screws up your vision...
Does anyone know when exactly this happened, or which eye it was? :(

me neither, please confirm to us whether its true or not if anyone knows. If its true, I'm presuming it may have been her right eye. No real reasons why, but a feeling it could be her right eye.

I have never heard of this but it seems like, if it is true at all, that she would have the condition in her later years. Like while she was at the Tower.

Just curious, how do you know about this... about her turning blind at the conciergerie? And was it from the dimness of the place that she was blinded? I feel her pain, I am in the dark 90% of the time when at work at an all womens gym and day spa...being in the dark all the time and seeing very little light is affecting me badly that I can barely see the difference in color shades anymore. Poor MA, for her to lose her eyesight. I hope it wasn't before her children were deprived from her, I'd hate not being able to see my kids before they are snatched out of my arms. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

I'm not a mother, but I can imagine that being the most horrible, painful thing any women could go through. Being kept away from your children and not knowing what will happen to them. I just finished reading Marie Therese, Child of Terror and it gave me this overwhelming feeling of what it's like to be both in MA's situation and MTC's as well. I mean, could you imagine? That poor family.

Yes its true she lost almost complete sight in one eye and her sight was impaired overall. She was so weak from hemorrhaging, stress, anxiety, poor nutrition and general ill health from the last few years she was finally unable to walk down the Concierge steps unaided. The gendarme who gaver his arm for support was later guillotined. So, so sad.

IIRC, I read in Goncourts' biography that MA, who had always had delicate eyes and was shortsighted, lost sight in one eye during her star in the damp cell in the Conciergerie. She suffered in so many different ways poor woman didn't she?

Cronin describes as Antoinette at her trial hearing voices but not being able to see them all that well. :(
