Post subject:  What would she do?

Question: If Queen Marie Antoinette was alive today, what do you think she would do? Do you think she would just want to blend into our culture or would she act on her wrongful accusations?

Question: What do you think the Queen would have done differently in her life? Do you even think she would change anything?

Please explain your answers. Thank you.

I think she would try to correct the modern day misconceptions about her, her life, her friends, her relationships, and he family. It would be very interesting indeed. I also think it would be easy for her to adapt, as she did from the Austrian court to the French court. I have even heard it said that it was impossible to tell that she was from Austria, just a few short years after her arrival in France. In fact, by the end of her life, she could hardly speak her native language at all. Also, considereing the pitiful education she recieved as a child, I think she dealt quite well with the change, and though she did not always apply herself fully to the task(s) at hand, she truly wanted to learn and please the people of her new country. So yes, I think she would react fairly well to the modern world.

An important distinction, since so much of how she reacted was a matter of training.

If you want to know how someone with a similar upbringing might act today, you can think of people as different as Princess Anne (of England) and Caroline Kennedy. Neither I think says much about their prominent family, though rumors enough swirl about.

On the other hand, she could have ended up like Paris Hilton (another member of a wealthy prominent family).

If she were just, well, her, I'm afraid she wouldn't be much of anyone, really. She might give a tabloid interview or two to try to cash in on her reputation and "reveal" the true story. But I don't think she was a great thinker, and she appears to have been a bit too easily influenced by others. Her brother also berated her for getting involved in politics at some point, since he said (as was probably true in her case) she wasn't equipped for it.

I have a terrible feeling, minus an aristocratic upbringing, she might have ended up like Brigitte Bardot (last seen more concerned with animals than people and, as I recall, somewhat to the right.)

Ironically, it was the dark days of the Revolution that brought out the best in her, and there she appeared truly noble. But minus a crisis, I don't know that that side of her ever would have shown.

Thank you all for your very interesting thoughts!!!
Hmm, I dont know if France would except her. I hope they could. She, of course would have supporters though to help her win back the throne.
Paris Hilton is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote this post. I was very affraid that Antoinette would choose that way of life....

I don't even know that today's royalists have any great expectation of winning back the throne (the Count of Paris - the King-in-waiting, if you will - voted for Mitterand in the Eighties, or so I was told, and the younger members of the family had... well, troubles.) Nor do I think that M-A would especially want to be queen, were she given her druthers (filthy rich, but very private, maybe). Bear in mind - she wasn't a ruler, really, just a pawn in an alliance.

She also wasn't personally that beautiful as I recall (though Vigee-Lebrun praised her skin), nor much of an orgiast, despite innumerable attempts to portray her so, so I don't know that we would ever have seen the " 'Toinette" tapes for sale in our local porn shops.

Are you saying they made MA porn!?
I dont think she would really want to be queen either. I think she would rather sit back and observe people.

No I'm not, but yes they did.

Or at least its Old Regime equivalent.

Hopefully some people here at least are familiar with the rich trove of pornographic cartoons depicting MA with an assortment of different people in a variety of situations. And a number of the Revolutionary pamphlets too are pornographic fantasies (the title that comes to mind right off includes the phrase "fureurs uterines" - uterine rages.)
