 Re: Did Marie Antoinette smoke?
It seems very unlikely, partially because it's not mentioned in any ready source, but also because two of her guards supposedly thought it funny to torment her with the smell of their smoke (the origin of today's smokers' insouciance to the effect of their exhalations, no doubt): http://books.google.com/books?id=pPrFAA ... te&f=falseOn dit qu'un autre par contre a brise sa pipe parcequ'elle incommodait la reine: http://books.google.com/books?id=VH4PAA ... te&f=false

 Re: Did Marie Antoinette smoke?
I've heard she only smoked Marlboro's lights, and barely a packet a week.

 Re: Did Marie Antoinette smoke?
I remember there's a part in the Coppola film when we can see Marie Antoinette and her company smoking, but I have never heard she did it in real life.
Women's smoke came in fashion at the second half of the 19th century, right? Tobacco smoking was a men privilege in the 1700s. Please, correct me if I am wrong.

 Re: Did Marie Antoinette smoke?
I was just wondering about marijuana? Im pretty sure it was around back then. I was wondering if M.A. or anyone in her circle smoked it. I read somewhere the founding fathers of america were stoned. Just a fun thought of people in the 18th century getting high lol.

 Re: Did Marie Antoinette smoke?
Absolutely not!
I have never seen an example of any woman smoking at Versailles, and MA didn't even drink. Only water specially brought from the source at Ville d'Avray near Versailles...the original fountain still exists and one can enter it! This water was even brought to the Temple prison and the Conciergerie, because of her easily upset tummy.

 Re: Did Marie Antoinette smoke?
Smoking really emerged in the XIX century. Empress Elisabeth of Austria for instance started to smoke. It was a completely new behaviour for someone in her position and it indeed appalled the good society back then -also because she indirectly caused the death of a female family member that set her dress ablaze. She also had opium and various other drugs.

RebeccaMatthies wrote: while the aristocracy "snorted" their tobacco. The tobacco was crushed into a powderlike consistency and is called "snuff". Small decorative boxes for storing and carrying your snuff with you were made - you still occasionally come across them in antique shops. Some of them were plain and some are very decorated and beautiful. Welcome to the forum Rebecca!
